Why a ‘Pain in the neck’? or a ‘Pain in the Butt’ is good for you

You all know the saying-

‘You’re a pain in the neck’

And generally it’s not something we’d like to be known as, just like eck pain and back pain aren’t normally something we’re happy about. But it’s not going away and it’s a massive problem as at least 80% of us will be affected by spinal pain at some point in our lives.

So what is the solution? I believe we need to look at the problem from a different angle. A wise man (you might of heard of him) called Albert Einstein said

‘Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result’.

The statistics show that every single day at least 1% of the workforce is sick due to back problems, that is 20,000 people a day in New Zealand. Every year the drug companies sell more and more painkillers and anti-inflammatories and we keep taking them. We keep doing the same thing, yet the back problem figures continue to rise.

large proportion of us spend our life neglecting the health of our body, then we get some pain or symptom, so we take a pill/potion/lotion/surgery to get rid of the symptom, and then continue to neglect our body.

Neglect body  >  Get symptom/pain  >  Take Pill to get rid of symptom  > Neglect body

The problem with this model is that the symptom or pain is rarely the problem. It is like a smoke alarm going off in your house (pain) and all you do is shut off the smoke alarm. Don’t get me wrong, I want people to be out of pain, but I believe we should view the pain as an alarm that something is out of balance in our body. This is how I live my life (80% of the time, it’s not about being perfect!)

See the difference? Living consciously doesn’t mean being perfect, it means being aware of how you Eat, Move and Think. Be aware that if you eat McDonalds for every single meal, you’re probably going to get out of balance, like get acid reflux. Or if you only get two hours sleep a night, you’re probably going to have a shorter temper. And if you don’t like that, then make a change – don’t take a pill.
